What Can I Expect During My Varicose Vein Treatment?

Spring is in the air, which means summer isn’t far behind. And you're excited about navigating the warmer months with legs that are free and clear of varicose veins, which affect about 24% of adults in the United States.
Standing between you and that leg-baring goal is your vein treatment here at Upper East Side Cardiology’s Vein Institute. The good news is that Dr. Satjit Bhusri and our team can make quick work of your varicose veins. For a little more detail, read on to learn what you can expect during your vein treatment with us.
Preparing for your varicose vein treatment
There’s nothing you need to do to prepare for your vein treatment with us, but we do suggest that you wear comfortable clothes around your legs. We also recommend you wear shoes you can take off easily. We do advise against tight boots that go up your calves.
When it comes to any medications, we typically go over these prior to your treatment, so you should follow our instructions.
During your varicose vein treatment
When you come in, we get you settled in the comfortable treatment room. Depending on the location of your varicose vein, we may have you change into a gown that allows us to easily access the vein.
Each of our four vein treatments — VenaSeal®, Varithena®, ClosureFast®, and Asclera® — is injectable, so we make small entry points in your skin. If you don’t want any discomfort from the injections, we can apply a topical anesthetic that numbs the area.
When we inject the sclerosing agent into your varicose vein, you might feel some temporary discomfort in the form of burning or cramping, but these side effects are generally short-lived.
In most cases, it takes us only minutes to perform your varicose vein treatment. Once we finish, you lie back and rest for a quarter of an hour or so to make sure that you don’t have any reactions, which aren’t common.
Once we’re satisfied that everything went smoothly, we send you on your way, and you can get back to your normal routine as there's no downtime.
After your varicose vein treatment
For the first few weeks after your varicose vein treatment, we recommend that you wear compression socks. Over the course of this time, your treated veins should fade away as they’re reabsorbed naturally by your body.
As you can see, minimally-invasive varicose vein treatments are quick and easy and pose no real disruption in your life.
